about

Shockley is the musical project of artist, Jeremy Shockley. Shockley was born and raised in the deserts of southern Arizona. Numinosity is his first release.

Fans of Pearl Jam's genre bending rock, Toad the Wet Sprockets' sublime song writing, and Duncan Sheik's introspection, should find Numinosity appealing.

Shockley is a self-taught multi-instrumentalist playing the piano, bass, guitar, drums, and singing. The ability to play many instruments gives Shockley a colorful musical lexicon. In a live setting, Shockley grabs the attention of the entire room giving a heartfelt and honest performance.

Growing up in Tucson, Shockley played in many bands providing the majority of the song writing. He then attended the Conservatory of Recording Arts and Sciences in Phoenix and moved to Los Angeles in the fall of 1999.

Using his engineering education, Shockley worked as a producer-engineer in one of Los Angeles's top studios, Henson Recording. Under the influence of such talents as Rupert Hine (Duncan Sheik), David Kahne, (Jeff Buckley), and Tony Hoffer (Beck), Shockley eventually self-produced Numinosity for a nominal budget on bartered studio time.

Not satisfied to be just on the production side of music, Shockley played as a supporting guitarist, a drummer, and vocalist. He tested the material that would eventually make up Numinosity at open mic nights and with a three piece group all over Los Angeles.

In May of 2004 Shockley was offered an opportunity to live and work at the Carriage House Recording Studios (Deftones, Pixies) in Connecticut. Extending the invitation was Shockley's friend and Numinosity co-producer, Brian Humphrey (Jane's Addiction, Bruce Springsteen, Instruction).

After making the three thousand mile move in August of 2004, Shockley continued to engineer and produce while collecting the talent for Numinosity. Tim Newton (Duncan Sheik) handled the drums, Josh Dodes (VH1's Band on the Run) was on Keys, and Rich Buckland (Wooden Circus) flew in from Los Angeles to play bass. Chris Chaney (Jane's Addiction, Alanis Morissette) was tapped to add his bass stylings to the song, "Koan".

Numinosity took shape over the next year. Ten songs were mixed in Los Angeles by Bryan Cook (Gary Jules, Inara George) and the final three were mixed by the artist himself in Connecticut. Mastering was done by Fred Kevorkian (White Stripes, Dave Matthews Band) in New York.

Numinosity is a diverse but cohesive work that begs the listener to engage. Shockley speaks his heart and mind with honesty and intelligence.

Track Name: Health
Have you ever been totally consumed?
By an idea or a concept
you soon found yourself at rest
On a table meant for one but ya had company
the smell of bleach and a paper screen

out of frustration

50 cents
a half hour of time
leave a hundred on the table for
so much more you'll get precisely what
what you paid for
not quite what you though it to be

out of frustration

what the hell am I doing here
she's got a unicorn tattooed on her breast
nothings ever been so out of place

Turn around your mine from behind
Turn around your mine from behind
Turn on your side
Turn around your mine from behind

I don't care what the sign says
it's not good for your health
In spite of what you just said
I'm no superman
It's within each of us to heal ourselves

It's not good for your health
Track Name: The Addiction Song
A vice
Around the soul
Fingers and palm
Turn the handle

Oh My God
I can't sit still
Not for the whole ride
Window is hazy
However reason so clear

The Devil is at work in these idol hands
I don't know but I hear he's fast
Just keep doing it
Don't look back

You just can
You just can
You just can
Not not do it

You got your fill
Takes more and more each time
I can't stand to look
Can't stand looking at you
Wish that I was blind

The Devil in these Idol Hands
I don't know him but I hear he's fast
Just keep doing it
Don't look back

You just can
You just can
You just can
Not not do it
Track Name: Attention
Relief

Sunset
What hurts at this angle now heals
Lithium enters an open green doorway
My gaze follows

On your back my fingers rest
You're made from a rib
In a kiss you give it back
What's exhaled becomes my breath
And only your attention can bring

Relief

Sunrise
Your hand on my side how it burns
I learn the most about myself
When I'm alone
And kisses are a far better fate than wisdom

On your back my fingers rest
You're made from a rib
In a kiss you give it back
What's exhaled becomes my breath

When I'm with you I'm satisfied
Like nothing else in this life
The streets melt away

When I'm with you I'm satisfied
No one else can make my head turn
Turn away

And I know
That no love can ever survive
Having said that
I still need you by my side

If what we are is what we mean to each other

I know I said it before
I'll say it again

I need your attention
Track Name: All I Have
Should I choose from
What's in front of me
Or what I really want

I can have any color I want
As long as it's black

All I have to go on is faith
All there is circumstance and change
A joy that has no opposite seems vague

A woman on my radio
Says we suffer from a kind of religious ache
I'm not one for religion
But I most certainly ache

All I have to go on is faith
All there is circumstance and change
A joy that has no opposite seems vague

I keep going
Full of fear and doubt

All I Have is your hand in my hand
As we watch the water wear down the mountain
Track Name: Koan
Turn it off
Lay form down
If all is illusion
This is a most painful one

So you found a way around
Say something about the here and now
You bang your stick to the ground
Then you tell me not to worry too much cause

It's not always so

The rise and the fall
Separate yourself from it
Change is everything
Then how come nothing seems to be changing for me

Life's no fun without lies
If I'm sick of hearing them
So what then?

So you found a way around
Say something about the here and now
You bang your stick to the ground
Then you tell me not to worry too much cause

It's not always so

So how to know
What to keep
And what to let go

So how to know
what to keep
and what to let go

If wisdom of found in the heart of the moment
My moment seems flawed
Where's the higher power
Why all the mystery
These questions have no
Recourse

So how to know
What to hide
And what to show
Track Name: Open Up
Since when am I the one with his heart open
It's been four long years I waited for Sunday nights with you

I've got a hole
I'll fill it in with you

Open up to me
Open up to me
It won't come easy
Open up to me

Since when am I the one with his eyes open
Four lonely years I've wasted Sunday nights without you
Perhaps I'm much better of by myself

I've got a hole
Fall in it you will

Open up to me
Open up to me
It won't come easy
Open up to me

If in two years time
I'd know the answer
How would I spend the time until then

If in two years time
How would I spend the time until then

Open up to me
Open up to me
It won't come easy
Open up to me
Track Name: Soldier
Pull my teeth
Let me see
Improve the quality of my life
It's not my heart I'm wearing on my sleeve

I assume your will

So set me free
let me breath
I don't care who's on the trains
As long as it's not me

I assume your will

And I know that we all can be replaced
But the old reality is much too hard to face

So I raise my arm
Until it grows tired

I assume your will
Track Name: Words
I sit so eagerly
Waiting for this trick of mind
Just a taste will keep hope alive

It takes two to dance
It only takes one to hope

7 8 your gone
8 4 I'm waiting

You tease and toy with your play thing
Only from a safe distance
Is there room for me in your house
In the attic I'm kept but forgotten

This intellectual sex as you call it
Is no substitute for the real thing

7 8 your gone
8 4 I'm waiting

I can't see or hear you
But I know what you've said
There'll be no magic kingdom
Only a land of ice and words

All the words in the word
Can never make up for time spent
In you arms

7 8 your gone
8 4 I'm waiting

Always waiting
Track Name: Coward
Waiting, oh to see signs
Cover your ears as not to spoil the surprise

You're not at liberty
To reveal the names of those who hate me
How brave of you

Thanks for using
Your ego as a shield

Congratulations
You found my pride
Yours the same as mine
Coward hide

I'm the most negative person you've ever met
You must not know yourself very well

Cause what's remembered does not a person make

Congratulations
You found my pride
Yours the same as mine
Coward hide

Congratulations
You found my vise
A frozen lake that is my heart

Suicide of my ego
Slow suicide of my ego

Congratulations
You found my vice
A frozen lake that is my heart

Nobody likes a downer

Congratulations
You found my pride
Yours the same as mine
Coward hide
Track Name: Apology
I apologize for all the things left unsaid

I apologize for all the weight left on your head

I apologize

Oh Son listen loud
My love was too soft
Oh Son listen soft
My voice was too loud

I apologize for secrets and lies
I apologize for coming up short in your eyes
I apologize did the best I could
I tried

Oh Son listen loud
My love was too soft
Oh Son listen soft
My voice was too loud

I apologize

Oh Son listen loud
My love was too soft
Oh Son listen soft
My voice was too loud
Track Name: What I Mean
Sent a letter off today
Used my turn of phrase
To sound so smart
About a song I heard

Try and figure out your taste
Use it to bring you close
Gonna make you a mix tape

Tricks won't work with you
So let the beauty of what we love
be what we do

And what I mean to do
Is kiss you

With eyes open I dream away
A northern city skies are grey
I fall asleep in your house
Your the 13th note in my scale

And what I mean to do
Is kiss you
Track Name: Ten Things
Ten things that I believe in
Starts with my own confusion
A surprise hug from behind
Coincidence
A 5 and 1/2 hour sunset
The salt on my skin after swimming in the ocean
That I spend way too much time alone
That I am always right, especially when I'm wrong
The gravity of someone next to me
And pizza

That I am lucky you are my friend

Ten things that you believe in
Primary colors
A bad and a good day
The pump that makes your heart beat
Black beans and rice
The bulb of the tulip
The thread that draws your line
The machine inside your stomach
The man that lives on your marble floor
And your hands

That I am lucky you are my friend

Ten things I believe in

It's the pump that makes your heart beat
Track Name: Hitherto
I feel blocked
I feel choked
I want to write a song make it good
Wish I could write a song and make it true

Is what I've learned wrong
The things I've known up until this point
Are they wrong

I feel bought
I feel sold
Like my dreams aren't my own
I only want what I'm told to want

Is what I've learned wrong
The things I've known up until this point
Are they wrong

So breath it in
Then let it all out
What you hold on to holds on to you

Is what I've learned wrong
The things I've known
Up until this point are they wrong
